Roman Kocherzhevsky’s endlessly inventive reimagining of Dead Souls for the Lensoviet Theatre shakes off layers of textbook dust to transform Nikolai Gogol’s classic literary poem into a deeply contemporary philosophical inquiry. Having developed his directorial voice as a long-time assistant to Yury Butusov, Kocherzhevsky channels his mentor's signature aesthetic of restlessness, creative deconstruction, and bold imagery into this debut production. Eschewing predictable historical period constraints, the staging fluidly blends past and present, costuming actors in everything from modern waterproof trench coats to traditional tailcoats across a set shifting between delicate antiquities and modern minimalism. Kocherzhevsky introduces an analytical, True Detective style framing where characters engage in intense, psychological dialogues with themselves and their fragmented memories rather than moving through a straightforward satirical plot. Powered by an ensemble cast featuring prominent artists like Sergey Migitsko and Anna Kovalchuk, Pavel Chichikov's transaction of deceased serfs becomes a deeply introspective descent into a landscape of moral stagnation, directly confronting the audience with Gogol’s ultimate question regarding how much of Chichikov's compromised opportunism resides within everyone today.
