Kama Ginkas’s internationally acclaimed masterclass in theatrical deconstruction, Lady with a Lapdog, breathes bittersweet life into Anton Chekhov’s famous short story of secret love and bourgeois longing. Staged at the Moscow Theater of Young Spectator (MTUZ) on an intimate, minimalist set designed by Sergei Barkhin, the production distills a European beach resort down to sand, unvarnished wooden chairs, and a lone boat. While the two core lovers struggle with an accidental, life-altering affair that upends their polite domestic lives, Ginkas continually shatters traditional theatrical illusions. He introduces two playful, Chaplinesque figures who mockingly interrupt the main characters, explicitly highlighting the artifice of the stage while paradoxically deepening the underlying tragedy. The resulting production balances bitter irony with deep vulnerability, mapping the agonizing realization that a fleeting vacation romance has permanently broken the safe boundaries of reality.
