Directed by Nikolai Gostiukhin for the Process Theater Bureau, Illusions is a compelling reimagining of Ivan Vyrypaev’s celebrated play that seamlessly shifts between the realms of live theatre and cinematic teleplay. Gostiukhin innovatively transforms Vyrypaev’s original structure—traditionally a series of isolated monologues—into an intimate, intense couples therapy session where two young pairs dissect their hidden marital anxieties. By filtering their personal mid-marriage crises through a metaphorical retelling of two lifelong older couples, the characters speak directly to the audience, erasing the fourth wall completely. Anchored by poignant reflections on gratitude and emotional responsibility, the production ultimately unfolds as a haunting parable about human vulnerability, stripping away lifetimes of domestic stability to reveal how easily our deepest certainties can crumble into mere illusions.
